Find Your Pillow Match

Tell us how you sleep and we'll narrow the field. The right pillow comes down to one thing more than any other — your sleep position — because a pillow's whole job is to keep your head and neck in line with your spine, in whatever position you actually spend the night.

Here's the upgrade most people miss: they spend months choosing a mattress, then pair it with the flat, broken-down pillow they've had for years. The two work as a system — a great mattress can't make up for a pillow that pushes your head too high or lets it sink too low.

A pillow is the fastest, most affordable upgrade in your bed. Use the filters to set your position, fill, and feel — and the picks below sort themselves to you.

Start with your sleep position — then filter by material and feel.

How to choose your pillow

A pillow's job is simple: keep your head and neck in line with your spine, in whatever position you actually sleep. Two things decide whether it does that — loft (height) and how that height interacts with your sleep position — followed by material feel and temperature.

Loft by sleep position

Side sleepers
Need the most loft — a medium-to-high pillow to fill the gap between ear and shoulder and keep the neck level. Adjustable fill is ideal so you can match your exact shoulder width. Best pillows for side sleepers
Back sleepers
Want a medium loft that cradles the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head forward. Contoured or medium-fill pillows work well here. Best pillows for back sleepers
Stomach sleepers
Need the least loft — a low, thin, soft pillow (or none at all) so the head isn't cranked upward. Adjustable pillows you can nearly empty are a good fit. Best pillows for stomach sleepers
Combination sleepers
Move between positions all night, so an adjustable pillow you can tune — or a moldable shredded-fill pillow that shifts with you — is the safest bet. Browse adjustable shredded-fill pillows

Material trade-offs

Solid memory foam
Best contouring and pressure relief, holds its shape — but traps the most heat and isn't adjustable. Look for gel infusion or ventilation if you sleep warm. Explore memory foam pillows
Shredded foam
Memory-foam contouring with airflow between the pieces, and almost always adjustable — add or remove fill to set your loft. The most flexible, do-anything option. Explore shredded-foam pillows
Latex
Bouncy and responsive rather than slow-sinking, naturally cooler and more breathable than memory foam, and hypoallergenic — but pricier and heavier. See our cooling-pillow picks
Down & down alternative
Soft, plush, and lightweight. Real down is premium and luxurious; down-alternative is affordable, washable, and allergy-friendly — but both compress flat and offer less structured support. Explore down-alternative pillows

Trial period

Most direct-to-consumer pillows come with a sleep trial (often 30–101 nights). It takes about two weeks to know whether a pillow truly fits — don't judge it on the first night, when your body is still adjusting.

When to replace

Replace a pillow every 1–2 years — sooner if the foam has lost its shape, the fill clumps, or it no longer springs back when folded. A simple test: fold the pillow in half; if it doesn't unfold on its own, it's done.
