Why are crib mattresses so firm?
AAP safe-sleep guidance prioritizes a firm, flat surface because soft surfaces can conform around an infant's face and increase suffocation risk.
What size is a standard crib mattress?
A standard U.S. full-size crib mattress is about 27.25 by 51.625 inches and no more than 6 inches thick.
Can I use a mattress topper in a crib?
No. Keep the infant sleep surface firm and flat with a fitted sheet only, unless your pediatrician gives specific guidance otherwise.
Are breathable crib mattresses still subject to safe-sleep rules?
Yes. Breathable construction does not replace AAP guidance: back to sleep, firm flat surface, and no soft bedding.
