Our Methodology

We restricted the field to sleep trackers with published validation data or strong third-party clinical comparisons (Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch). We further filtered for trackers comfortable enough to wear overnight, with companion apps that surface sleep insights rather than just raw sensor data. Trackers that require taking off mid-sleep (early Apple Watches without watchOS 9, most basic fitness bands) were excluded. We did not run polysomnography ourselves — methodology is research-based using third-party validation studies.

Oura Ring Gen3 has the most published validation data for sleep stage detection in non-clinical wearables — multiple peer-reviewed comparisons against polysomnography put it within ~6–10% of clinical-grade accuracy for sleep stage classification. Whoop 4.0 is comparable but less independently validated. Apple Watch Series 10 with watchOS 11 has narrowed the accuracy gap significantly. For most consumers, the practical difference between the top three is smaller than the variance from night-to-night sleep behavior.

Do I need a wearable to track sleep?

No. The Withings Sleep mat sits under your mattress and tracks sleep stages, snoring, heart rate, and respiratory rate without you wearing anything. Accuracy is slightly behind a top-tier wearable but the comfort cost is zero. Couples who share a bed will need two pads — the mat tracks the sleeper on its side of the bed.
