Start With the Care Label
Before applying any of the methods below, check the care label sewn into the topper. Manufacturer instructions override general guidance — some toppers have specific quirks (a non-washable cover, a special detergent requirement, a maximum temperature) that only the brand knows. If the care label is missing or unreadable, use the type-specific guidance below as a default.
Memory Foam Topper
Not machine washable
Memory foam (solid block) tears apart in a washing machine. Agitation breaks the cell structure and the foam loses its support permanently.
Method:
- 1Strip any cover and machine wash the cover separately (cold, gentle) if it's removable
- 2Vacuum the foam topper with an upholstery attachment to remove surface dust and hair
- 3Spot-clean stains with a microfiber cloth dampened with cold water and a drop of mild dish soap — damp not wet
- 4For odor, sprinkle baking soda over the surface, leave for at least 30 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly
- 5Air-dry completely before replacing on the mattress — at least several hours with a fan, longer in humid conditions
Latex Topper (Natural or Synthetic)
Not machine washable
Latex degrades with detergent exposure, agitation, and dryer heat. Natural latex is also naturally antimicrobial and dust-mite-resistant, so it needs less frequent cleaning than other materials.
Method:
- 1Remove and machine wash the cover separately if it's removable (cold, gentle, low or no heat dry)
- 2Wipe the latex surface with a damp cloth using mild soap and cold water
- 3Blot dry with a clean cloth — don't soak
- 4Air-dry flat in a shaded area (UV breaks down latex over time; direct sun shortens its lifespan)
- 5Replace on the mattress only after fully dry
Down or Feather Topper
Machine washable with cautions
Down can be washed but needs a front-loading or large-capacity machine, gentle cycle, cold or warm water, and a long careful drying schedule. Standard top-loaders with center agitators can damage the baffle construction.
Method:
- 1Use a front-loading washer or commercial-size laundromat machine
- 2Cold or warm water on gentle cycle with a small amount of mild detergent (or specialty down detergent)
- 3Run an extra rinse to remove all detergent residue — detergent left in down clumps it
- 4Tumble dry on low heat with three to four tennis balls or wool dryer balls to redistribute the fill and prevent clumping
- 5Plan for multiple drying cycles (often 2 to 3 hours total); pull the topper out occasionally to fluff and check fill distribution
- 6The topper must be completely dry before use — damp down develops mildew within days
Polyester or Down-Alternative Topper
Most machine washable
Polyester is the most washing-tolerant topper material. Most can survive standard machine cycles, though low heat in the dryer protects fill longevity.
Method:
- 1Machine wash on warm gentle cycle with mild detergent
- 2Add a second rinse to fully remove detergent
- 3Tumble dry on low heat with dryer balls
- 4Polyester fill can scorch or melt on high heat — keep the dryer setting low
- 5Confirm full dryness before re-using
Wool Topper
Spot-clean or specialty wash only
Wool felts and shrinks in warm water with agitation. Most wool toppers are spot-clean only; a handful are labeled machine washable on a cold wool-specific cycle.
Method:
- 1Spot-clean stains with cold water and a mild wool-safe detergent
- 2Air-dry flat (never tumble dry wool toppers — heat shrinks them)
- 3Vacuum periodically with an upholstery attachment for general maintenance
- 4Wool's natural antimicrobial and moisture-wicking properties mean it needs less frequent deep cleaning than other materials
Cotton Mattress Pad (Quilted Topper)
Most are fully machine washable
Cotton mattress pads — the quilted-cover style with thin batting — are typically the easiest topper to clean. Most can be machine washed on warm with regular detergent and tumble dried on low to medium.
Method:
- 1Machine wash on warm or cool, gentle cycle, with mild detergent
- 2Add a second rinse if you used a heavier-than-usual detergent dose
- 3Tumble dry on low or medium heat
- 4Cotton can wrinkle — remove promptly from the dryer and lay flat or replace immediately on the bed
How Often to Wash
- Machine-washable toppers (down, polyester, cotton pads): every 2 to 3 months, or whenever the topper has been exposed to sweat, spills, or pet hair
- Spot-clean-only toppers (memory foam, latex, wool): vacuum monthly, deep spot-clean every 3 to 6 months, address spills immediately
- All topper types: replace the topper itself every 2 to 5 years depending on material — older toppers lose loft, support, and freshness regardless of washing
Drying Is Where Most Toppers Get Ruined
Two failure modes are common: damp toppers re-installed too soon (mildew within days) and high-heat drying that melts or scorches the fill. Both are easily avoided. Always confirm the topper is dry throughout — not just the surface — before re-installing. For down and polyester, pulling the topper out mid-cycle to fluff and check for damp clumps helps ensure even drying.
If the topper is past its useful life, a fresh one is one of the cheapest sleep-quality upgrades available.
